Estimation of Phase Noise Transfer Function

Quantifying frequency converters’ residual phase noise is essential in various applications, including radar systems, high-speed digital communication, or particle accelerators. Multi-input signal source analyzers can perform such measurements out of the box, but high cost limits their accessibility. Based on an analysis transmission theory and capabilities popular instrumentation, we propose a technique extending functionality single-input devices. The method supplements absolute with estimates transfer function (also called jitter function), allowing calculation noise. details hardware setup used for verification are presented. injection single-tone pseudo-random modulations to test examined. Optional employment spectrum analyzer reduce time number data needed characterization. A wideband synthesizer integrated voltage-controlled oscillator was investigated using method. estimated matches white-box model based synthesizer’s structure values loop components. first results confirm validity proposed technique.
